Before we talk about AI we need to define what is intelligence. You might have noticed that AI has a different meaning to different people. Some say that AI is an artificial life-form that is able to surpass human intelligence, and for others, AI can be any technology that processes data. All but the simplest human behavior is related to intelligence, while complicated insect behaviors are never considered intelligent.
Ants possess different and distinct modules in their brains. These modules are dedicated to different navigational tasks. For example, one module keeps track of distance traveled. A second module is dedicated to visual scenery, it allows ants to recognize important routes.
In conclusion, intelligence must include the ability to adapt to new circumstances.
The Lovelace Test was designed in 2002 by a team of computer scientists. It can only be passed if the AI is able to generate an original idea. If AI is capable of doing this without its human creator being able to explain how the AI did it, this would prove that it's capable of thinking for itself by going beyond its own code. While this is useful, the test fails to prove that AI's creation isn't just a fluke.
Mark Riedl associate professor in the Georgia Tech school of interactive computing
Mark Riedl proposed modifications to the Lovelace test. These modifications introduce new rules to the test, such as AI must create by design, not chance. Unsurprisingly, this is a much trickier test as it demands an understanding of what's being asked.
Nowadays AI researchers and academics are using creativity, this is an interesting shift away from measuring an AI's success via its mechanical skills.
In the creative industries, the use of AI is increasing, for example, AI can make movie trailers.

AI's still light years away from matching human intellect. AI can only perform tasks that are first mathematized and coded. Human traits like humor and empathy are almost impossible to mimic via code. Testing natural intelligence is complex enough; AI is a whole new game. Maybe we should focus on the more practical applications of limited AI, instead of the pursuit of a self-conscious machine that's just as smart as us.
