Industries affected by Artificial Intelligence

By now, you should understand what is AI and what kind of problems can be solved using AI and machine learning. So far, many examples have been trivial and not too useful in practice. Let's take a look at how industries are using AI as of today.

Below is a list of industries in a no particular order:

  • Agriculture
  • Healthcare
  • Automotive
  • Defence Industry
  • Manufacturing
  • Construction
  • Energy Industry
  • Mass media
  • Education Industry
  • Sports Industry
  • Transport
  • Real Estate
  • Insurance
  • Advertising
  • Entertainment
  • Customer Service

Task 1:

Before advancing further, go through the list above and think how each of the industries might be using AI.

  • What is the actual use case? Automating something that is being done manually? Get insights for better decision making?
  • What data is used for input? How is the data gathered?
  • What are the obstacles to adopting AI?
  • What is the effect on employment?

Task 2:

Now that you have imagined some use cases in various industries, take a look at the real AI landscape. What is being done right now, as of today? What are start-up companies trying to make from dream to reality very soon?

Good sources are e.g. Forbes's AI section and CB Insight's AI 100. Do look for other sources of information as well.

Task 3:

Is it being said that AI is the new electricity or the new oil. Find out who is saying this. Think for yourself; what is the truth ground of this analogue? Are companies just in the fear of missing out?

Use your time into these tasks. You should be using at least 2 hours of your time. Hopefully, these thoughts and ideas will keep your brain active for days and weeks to come.
