Interior Design: Assignment

Design Your Own Space

In this lesson, we will go over designing concept art for environment art focused on a room. This same method can be applied to any kind of other environment art pieces, but for now, let's start with something small and simple.

The process is divided into two parts. The first is "the blueprint", and the second the actual concept art of the room interior. The assignment can be done with traditional pen and paper or with any kind of digital drawing software, and just like previously, the demonstration is made using Krita.

Your Assignment

For this assignment, design a room of your liking. The theme is free, so you can place the room into a cyberpunk world or a different historical era, or simply use your own room. If you are designing for a character, think of their personality - is there any vital information for the story that could be told through the interior design. As an example, if the character is a knight, their room would have a shelf for weapons and a hanger for the armor. Ask yourself how you would talk about the character through the room even if they aren't there.

Plan a rough layout of the space. Where is the furniture, are there windows or doors, and what are the measurements of the area? Of course, it's recommended to start with collecting references just like with any other design work.

During the rough planning, keep in mind the fundamentals of interior design from the previous lesson. Design the room to be believable, place the objects so you create a clear space for fluid navigation, light the room with natural or artificial light. Think of colors: are the colors and patterns supporting each other or is the person occupying the space not so caring of such things?

PureRef is a great tool for gathering and organizing references into a reference board.

The demo room is a studio apartment with a small kitchen. The furniture is light-colored, whereas a slightly darker wood texture is working as a contrast for the white color. The work desk indicates that the occupant is either a student or a remote worker. The sofa bed functions as a sofa on the days and transforms into a bed at night.

The Blueprint

The next step is to make the layout, the blueprint. This is a rough plan of the space and of course the proportions of the area and furniture. You can make as many designs as you want until you are satisfied with it.

This part is the easiest, just a rough plan directly above the space. For beginners, it's recommended to start with a square area, and after gaining more experience start working with more complex designs.

Time for Isometric Drawing

Isometric projection is a method of visually representing 3D objects in 2D. Drawings are drawn in 30 degree angles. It's a type of axonometric drawing: the same scale is used for every axis to prevent creating a distorted image caused by the foreshortening of the axes.

Most of the time 30 degrees is used in the game development industry. The assignment will show you how to make an isometric grid with Krita.

In Krita, you can create an isometric grid to guide you during the drawing. Set the cell spacing to fit your needs. This file is 3000px x 4000 px, so the cell spacing is quite big. After the grid is set, start with the general layout of the room. Use the grid as a guide guide while drawing furniture and objects into space.

Depending on your art style, you might need to make another sketch that is more defined, or you might have done the complete design in one phase. There is no wrong way to approach this, so every way is the right way.

The first sketch with isometric grid.

The second sketch is more defined. As you can see, the window was left out, so remember that you can always make changes at any point if necessary.

The third sketch looks much better but still needs some work.

Continue the Design

The previous concepts are still quite rough and bland. Good concept artists work more on their designs.

The room looks much better after a little time is spend on the values and throwing some items into it. As a tip, start keeping track of how long it takes to complete the whole process. Employers are interested in the schedules.

Nice job! Now you have a base for your isometric interior design. Practice and experiment with the isometric drawings as they are a pretty popular way of making environment concept art.
