What is Cybersecurity?

'Cybersecurity is the practice of defending computers, servers, mobile devices, electronic systems, networks, and data from malicious attacks.'

Defining Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity can be defined as the process of keeping information and network safe from damage or theft. It also ensures that the devices and data are not misused. It applies to both hardware and software, including information stored in the cloud. Cybersecurity includes everything from the protection of personal information to critical infrastructures. Cyber Security is divided into a few common categories described below.

  1. Network Security. The practice of securing computer networks from unauthorized access, misuse, modification, or denial of network resources, thereby providing a secure platform for computers, users, and programs.
  2. Application Security. It makes sure that software and devices are safe from threats. A compromised application could provide an opportunity to the malicious actor to gain access to the application data. Successful security begins in the design stage, well before a program or device is deployed.
  3. Information Security. Information security protects the integrity and privacy of data, both in storage and in transit.
  4. Operational Security. Operational security refers to the processes and decisions involved in the handling and protection of data. It also defines the procedures and permissions for accessing data as well as data storage, which also falls under this umbrella.

'Cyber Security is like an umbrella, its purpose is to guard the information, data, and network from malicious threats.'

The Danger Zone

Computers
Computers are full of personal information. Important files, videos, and even banking records are at risk if a computer is not secure.

Smartphones
Smartphones may be even more crucial than computers. Most of our lives fit into these small gadgets, so their security should be taken seriously.

Cloud Services
Different cloud services provide a replacement for traditional data storage, such as hard drives. Usually, cloud services are well-protected, but the user should also be aware of the possible risks.

Your data is not secure anywhere unless you adopt proper security measures to protect it. Ultimately, Cyber Security is about protecting data and devices—regardless of where it is stored. Below you can find a few tips about how you can protect yourself against cyber attacks.

Staying Safe

There are countless threats surrounding our digital lives, but there’s also a lot we can do to protect ourselves. The following are some of the most basic measures that should be taken into account.

Install Updates
You should always update your software and operating system. By doing this you benefit from the latest security updates too.

Anti-Virus Software
Security programs known as anti-virus software will detect and remove threats. Remember to update your anti-virus software regularly for the best level of protection.

Strong Passwords
You should always ensure your passwords are not easily guessable. Many companies are working on replacing passwords with stronger measures as we speak, but until then, passwords are what the most of us rely on.

Network Safety
Avoid using wi-fi networks in public places. Unsecure networks leave you vulnerable to cyber-attacks. Don't be fooled if some hotspots present a "terms and conditions" page to click before you can access the network, as it could be nothing more than a welcome page. It doesn't mean you're joining a hacker-proof network.
