Introduction

Hearing the word game producer may not mean much to you if you're not familiar with game development beforehand. Is it a person that creates things for the game? Produces more content and assets? Aren't they always associated with movies? Not quite!

Game Producer is an Interesting Role

Out of all the major game development roles, the producer is generally the one that gets talked about the least. It isn't quite as flashy as game design or art for example, so it doesn't get the same spotlight in the public. Movie producers tend to be much more commonly known in comparison. Even among people working in the game industry, there may not be a clear understanding of what a producer actually does during game development, so let's clear that up right away.

The main purpose of a game producer is to make sure that the production of the game goes smoothly. Basically, they're tasked with general project management. Even though their responsibility rarely includes making content for the game itself, they're still in a key role, since they can easily alter the faith of the whole project. Poor management has led to the death of many games, and this is obviously something producers want to avoid.
